What a Nairobi postal code means

In Kenya, the postal code points mail toward a particular Posta office. The P.O. Box number identifies the recipient’s box at that office. The two details work together.

Important: Nairobi does not have one universal code for every address. 00100 belongs to Nairobi GPO. A recipient using another Posta office should normally provide that office’s code.

Address element What it identifies Example
P.O. Box number The individual box assigned to a person, business, or organisation P.O. Box 12345
Postal code The Posta office or delivery point associated with the box 00100
Locality The city or town used with the postal code Nairobi
Physical address A building, road, house, office, floor, or neighbourhood used for visits and courier delivery Westlands, Nairobi

Posta describes private letter boxes as delivery points installed within post offices and other convenient locations. Mail is sorted into the box at the office named by the address. See the official Posta Kenya Mail Services page for the postal authority’s current service information.

Address format

How to write a Nairobi P.O. Box address

Put the recipient first, the P.O. Box number next, and the five-digit postal code with Nairobi below it. Add Kenya for international mail.

Individual recipient

MARY WANJIKU
P.O. BOX 12345
00100 NAIROBI
KENYA

Business recipient

NAIROBI CITY STUDIO
ATTN: ACCOUNTS DEPARTMENT
P.O. BOX 67890
00606 NAIROBI
KENYA

Do not confuse the numbers. In P.O. Box 12345, 00100 Nairobi, 12345 is the box number and 00100 is the postal code. The postal code cannot be used as a substitute for the P.O. Box number.

For a courier or physical delivery

A P.O. Box is a postal address, not a street address. For a courier, include the recipient’s name, building or business name, floor or unit, road or street, neighbourhood, phone number, and any delivery instructions. You can include the P.O. Box as an additional business or postal contact.

Make the right selection

Which Nairobi code should you use?

You already have a P.O. Box Copy the postal code supplied by the recipient or printed on the official box details.
You are applying for a new box Select the Posta office where you want the box to be located. Do not choose a code based only on the neighbourhood that feels closest.
A form asks for city and postal code Enter the correct five-digit office code and use Nairobi as the city when the selected office is in Nairobi.
You only know “Nairobi” 00100 Nairobi is the GPO reference, but confirm the recipient’s actual code before sending important or time-sensitive mail.
You are sending a parcel to a door Use a physical address, working phone number, and courier instructions. A postal code alone does not identify a home or office entrance.
The address is near Nairobi Check the county and locality carefully. Some nearby places appear in broad Nairobi postal lists but are geographically outside Nairobi County.

This directory preserves the post-office labels shown in the Posta online application selector. Search by neighbourhood, office name, or code.

The neighbourhood categories are practical city-guide groupings, not official Posta boundaries. When applying, use the exact Posta office selected in the live application.

Why might another list call 00102 “State Law”?

The Posta application selector labels 00102 as Nairobi EMS. Some other published postal-code lists use the label State Law for the same code. When completing an application, follow the label shown in the live Posta flow or confirm the office name with Posta.

Know the boundary

Nairobi and the wider metropolitan area

Postal lists often bring together Nairobi and nearby metropolitan locations because people travel, work, study, and receive mail across county boundaries. That does not make every nearby code a Nairobi County address.

Nairobi fringe

Githurai and Kamiti are included here because they appeared in the Nairobi-associated extraction. They sit on the Nairobi and Kiambu edge, so confirm the correct locality when completing official paperwork.

Nearby places

Locations such as Athi River, Mlolongo, Ruiru, Ongata Rongai, Kitengela, Kiambu, Kikuyu, Limuru, Kiserian, and Namanga should be treated as separate localities unless the recipient or official form specifies otherwise.

Posta Kenya process

How to create a Nairobi P.O. Box address

A P.O. Box application creates a postal collection point connected to a Posta office. It does not create a residential street address. Posta’s online service provides the current application route and the available office choices.

  1. Open the official application Use the Posta Online Box Services portal and choose the new box application route.
  2. Select the office Choose the county and Posta office where the box should be located. Use the directory above as a planning reference.
  3. Complete the applicant details The live form may request personal, business, contact, identification, physical-address, and supporting-document information.
  4. Review the payment and terms Charges, key deposits, renter categories, availability, and convenience fees can change. Confirm the current total in the official application before paying.
  5. Save the confirmation Keep the assigned box number, office name, postal code, and confirmation details together. Use all of them when sharing the new address.

Posta also describes M-Post as a virtual postal service with notifications when mail is received. If you need a virtual rather than physical box, check the current terms directly with Posta before registering.

Avoid delays

Common Nairobi addressing mistakes

  • Using 00100 for every Nairobi recipient, even when the recipient’s box is registered at another Posta office.
  • Leaving out the P.O. Box number and writing only the postal code.
  • Treating a postal code as a street address or delivery instruction.
  • Selecting a branch because it is near your home without checking where the box is actually registered.
  • Writing Nairobi when the official address belongs to Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, or another nearby county.
  • Sending a courier to a P.O. Box without supplying a physical address and phone number.
  • Changing the recipient’s office label, code, or box number because another website uses a different naming convention.

Businesses can also use Nairobi’s Economy, Business and Innovation guide when deciding how to present postal and physical contact details publicly.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

What is Nairobi’s postal code?

00100 is the code for Nairobi GPO. Nairobi has many other Posta offices and office-specific codes, so the correct code depends on the recipient’s registered office.

Is a postal code the same as a P.O. Box number?

No. The P.O. Box number identifies the recipient’s box. The postal code identifies the Posta office associated with that box.

Can I use 00100 for Westlands, Karen, or another neighbourhood?

Use 00100 only when the recipient’s P.O. Box is registered with Nairobi GPO. If the box is registered with Westlands, Karen, or another office, use that office’s postal code.

Which code should I select when applying online?

Select the Posta office where you want the box located. The live application selector is the final reference for available office names and options.

Can a postal code deliver a parcel to my house?

A postal code helps identify a postal office, but it does not identify a home entrance. For door delivery, provide a complete physical address and a working phone number.

Are Githurai and Kamiti part of Nairobi?

They are commonly included in Nairobi-facing postal lists because of their metropolitan connection. They are on the Nairobi and Kiambu edge, so confirm the official county and locality required by the form or recipient.

Where can I verify a Posta office?

Use the official Posta Kenya post-office locator or contact Posta directly if the office name or code is unclear.
